Labette, Kan. - Splitting the first two games of the home and home series against Labette County was certainly a microcosm of the never give up attitude this Larks Baseball team built prior to the season. Hesston jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, led by home runs from Sophomores Sam Wiese and Kody Pilor. The offense was able to tack on two additional runs in the third. The Cardinals down eight, battled with back to back three run innings to make it a two run game going into the sixth inning. Freshman Jarod Fugate was able to hold down the fort for the Larks pitching staff and rebound after giving up three of those runs to shut out the Cardinals for the last six outs of the game.
In game two the Labette offense exploded for 14 runs including five doubles as a team. Freshman Gavin Moncure was one of the bright spots on offense for Hesston, getting three hits and two runs batted in. Sophomore Sam Wiese also had another great game with two hits of his own and three runs batted in. Labette offensively was too much and the Larks lost 14-7.
Hesston, Kan. - Brody Burnette led the Larks to a complete game 7-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon, striking out a school record 16 batters. The Larks were blessed with the best pitching outing of the season, and backed that up with a Sophomore David Lambert Home Run along with seven runs of aid. Hesston also capitalized on five hit batters and three walks. Timely hitting is everything in baseball and this game was the definition of "taking advantage of what the defense gives you".
The last game of the series the Larks yet again were able to capitalize on three hit batters and three walks. Sophomore Kody Pilor led the team with two hits in the game. Hesston went into the top of the seventh inning up 4-3. Labette was able to bring across the tying run leaving the Larks in the pivotal 3-3 tie heading to the bottom of the inning. Sophomore David Lambert who also had just pitched two innings, came up to the plate with a winning runner in scoring position. He hit a rocket of a ground ball to the third baseman who missed it on the bounce, the ball made its way to the outfield and the Larks won the game 4-3.
