Bethel welcomes piano teachers from institutions, studios and programs across the state, along with well-known pianist Spencer Myer in a public concert Friday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ad Building chapel.
The recital is free and open to the public, as a special feature of the Kansas Music Teachers Association (KMTA) annual conference being held on the Bethel campus Sept. 16-17.
Myer began Aug. 1 as associate professor of music in piano at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, Bloomington.
Before that, he was artist-teacher of piano and collaborative piano at Longy School of Music of Bard College, 2016-22, as well as an adjunct professor of music in piano at the Jacobs School.
Lauded for “superb playing” and “poised, alert musicianship” by the Boston Globe, and labeled “definitely a man to watch” by London’s The Independent after his 2012 Wigmore Hall recital debut, Myer is one of the most respected and sought-after artists on today’s concert stage.
He has been a soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra; the Cape Town and Johannesburg Philharmonics; the Indianapolis, New Haven and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras; and Beijing’s China National Symphony.
He has collaborated with conductors Michael Christie, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Thomas Wilkins, among others.
Myer’s 2005 tour of South Africa included a performance of Beethoven’s five piano concerti with the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, followed by six return tours.
An in-demand chamber musician, he has appeared at the Lev Aronson Legacy Festival with cellists Lynn Harrell, Ralph Kirshbaum, Amit Peled and Brian Thornton, and enjoys a recurring partnership with the Miami String Quartet at the Kent/Blossom Music Festival.
A Steinway Artist, Myer has released four CDs on the Steinway & Sons label: Piano Rags of William Bolcom, and three discs with cellist Thornton featuring repertoire of Brahms, Debussy and Schumann.
Myer is a graduate of the Oberlin (Ohio) Conservatory of Music, the Juilliard School and Stony Brook University.
